Rats Recommend: The New Colossus Festival Special Edition
The New Colossus is back in the Lower East Side all weekend. Solo tickets are available at the door for all shows.
Hello my little rat babies! It’s Rizzo here with a special edition of Rats Recommend and we’re talking all about The New Colossus Festival: the annual swarm of little punk vermin that descends upon the Lower East Side for one blessed weekend every March. The festival is well under way but there’s still time to make the most of a full festival pass ($90 for unlimited access) or cherry pick a few shows to pop into for a cover at the door. It’s a little bit like SXSW, but before all of the brand activations and military contracts.
What I particularly love about this festival is that it’s scattered across a slew of smaller rooms in lower Manhattan all within easy walking distance of one another. The lineup is reliably both solid and massive year after year, so you’re almost always gonna catch a band you haven’t seen before absolutely shredding. Make sure you pack your earplugs and wear your orthopedic Docs.
Here’s our short list of the bands you’re gonna wanna check out, and when they’re playing:
FRIDAY, MARCH 7
Garden Centre at Baker Falls, 6:15 PM
SuperKnova at Bowery Electric, 7:00 PM
CS Cleaners at Berlin, 7:45 PM
SATURDAY, MARCH 8
Delivery at Drom, 9:15 PM
Mengers at Baker Falls, 10:00 PM
The OBGMs at Pianos (Showroom), 10:45 PM
SUNDAY, MARCH 9
Homescreen at Baker Falls, 4:15 PM
Sterling Press at Arlene’s Grocery, 6:45 PM
Dutch Mustard at Pianos (Showroom), 7:45 PM
As a bonus, Rita’s got some recs for good parties to hit back in Brooklyn after the festival showcases all wrap up.
Rita’s Recs:
Friday, March 7 at 8:00 PM at Million Goods
Rita says: This is a good set for an earlier crowd featuring a very good NY-based DJ.
Saturday, Marcy 8 at 9:30 PM at Paragon
Rita says: The club is open until 3 AM, and Clarisa Kimskii is the DJ you’re gonna wanna see. *Chef’s kiss*
Ladiez Drink Free One Year Anniversary
Saturday, March 8 at 10:00 PM at Bossa Nova Civic Club
Rita says: Ladiez Drink Free is a trio of DJs who have been performing together for the last year. This one’s for the hot girls, specifically.
